Hendrick Hudson DAR Speaker Series: The Women of Schuyler Mansion: Monday March 22, 2:15pm

The 2021 speaker series of the Hendrick Hudson Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution kicks off on March 22nd at 2:15pm with a lively Zoom presentation about the many women in the Schuyler family during the 18th century.

Thanks to Hamilton: An American Musical, the three eldest Schuyler sisters, Angelica, Eliza (Elizabeth), and Peggy (Margaret) are now household names. But did you know there were more than three sisters? The Women of Schuyler Mansion explores the lives of their mother, Catharine van Rensselaer Schuyler, the five Schuyler sisters, and the women the Schuylers enslaved. Join this lively talk to learn a more complete history of life in the 18th century at Schuyler Mansion!

The talk will be given by Jessie Serfilippi, who is a writer and historical interpreter at Schuyler Mansion in Albany. Her areas of research include the people the Schuylers enslaved, the Schuyler women, and the Hamiltons. She wrote “‘As odious and immoral a thing:’ Alexander Hamilton’s Hidden History with Slavery” and has been published in Fierce: Essays by and About Dauntless Women.

The Hendrick Hudson Chapter of the DAR was chartered 125 years ago in 1896. A nonpartisan organization welcoming eligible women without regard to race, creed, or religion, it includes more than 100 members who trace their lineage back to a patriot in the American Revolution–whether serving as soldier, shopkeeper, or seamstress. In accordance with the National Society DAR, members work to perpetuate the memory and spirit of the women and men who achieved American independence, to promote the development of an enlightened public opinion, and to foster patriotic citizenship. The chapter owns and maintains its meeting house, the Historic Robert Jenkins House, at 113 Warren Street in Hudson. The chapter and the chapter house can be accessed at hudson-dar.orgfacebook.com/HudsonDAR,  instagram.com/robertjenkinshousehendrickhudsonchapterdar@gmail.com, and (518) 828-9764.
