At its Historic Robert Jenkins House, the Hendrick Hudson Chapter celebrated Flag Day with a “picnic” that harked back to the 1950s, when Flag Day became a national holiday. Think Harry Truman time …

A short business meeting featured the swearing in of officers elected to the 2025-2028 term.

Catskill’s On-Ti-Ora Chapter’s regent conducted the swearing-in.

Members and guests enjoyed their picnic and were led in a rousing rendition of George M. Cohan’s “You’re a Grand Old Flag” by the former New York State Chair of the Flag of the United States.

Then keynote speaker Tom Shannon, Germantown Town Historian, provided a look at the William Smiths, Senior and Junior, both of whom led complicated lives, locally, 250 years ago during the American Revolution. His in-depth research into these important figures who then were high-profile but now are rarely spoken of was enthusiastically received.

Favors were drawn at the day’s conclusion.

”If Betsy (Ross) Could See Us Now,” reflecting the famous 1917 Percy Moran painting “The Birth of Old Glory,” was the picnic’s theme.
