Created in 1934, the Good Citizens Award and Scholarship Contest of the Daughters of the American Revolution encourages and rewards qualities of good citizenship shown by high school seniors from accredited high schools, both public and private, throughout the United States. This award recognizes and rewards individuals who possess the qualities of dependability, service, leadership, and patriotism in their homes, schools, and communities. These students are selected by their schools because they demonstrate these qualities to an outstanding degree.
For one part of the scholarship requirement, students write an essay. This year’s is entitled: “Our American Heritage and Our Responsibility for Preserving It: How do the qualities of a good citizen (dependability, service, leadership and patriotism) help support our nation?” Additionally, students list all activities they have participated in. They also provide two recommendations as well as their academic record.
Each student receives a certificate, a monetary award, a pin, and a wallet-size card.
One of the five high-school awardees will receive the Hendrick Hudson Chapter award on the 12th.
Congratulations to these deserving students for all their accomplishments and for being chosen as winners of the Good Citizen contest for their schools!
