On December 12th, the Hendrick Hudson Chapter of the NSDAR met virtually with high school seniors from Columbia County who were selected as their school’s DAR Good Citizen and with their families. Good Citizens included:
- Vincent Marasco, Chatham High School
- Gabriella Popow, Hudson High School
- Daniel Chen, Ichabod Crane High School
- Benjamin Chaput, New Lebanon Jr Sr High School
- Madeleine Dennis, Taconic Hills High School
From these five students, Benjamin Chaput was awarded the Hendrick Hudson DAR Chapter Good Citizen Award.
For their scholarship application, each student submits an essay. This year’s was entitled: “Our American Heritage and Our Responsibility for Preserving It: How do the qualities of a good citizen (dependability, service, leadership and patriotism) help support our nation?” Benjamin Chaput’s winning essay closed with the following:
“I’ve played taps at numerous Memorial Day ceremonies, taken part in countless flag ceremonies throughout my life and placed flags on veterans graves on Memorial Day for the past eight years; and most importantly, see everyone around me regardless of their political beliefs or degree of agreeability as an American and as part of my community. As Americans we are a part of the most diverse and impactful country in the world; a country that throughout history has been able to overcome any challenge or oppressor by acting as a whole and by recognizing our similarities and strengths rather than by dividing each other.”
Each of the five students received a certificate, a monetary award, a pin, and a wallet-size card.
Good Citizens Committee Chair Maryanne Lee said, “The Hendrick Hudson Chapter offers its congratulations to these deserving students for all their accomplishments and for being chosen as winners of the Good Citizen contest for their schools. Special congratulations go to Benjamin Chaput for receiving the Hendrick Hudson NSDAR Chapter Good Citizen Award.”
